PORTUGAL TRUMP CROATIA IN A DRAB GAME
In one of the least entertaining knockout games in recent
history, Portugal went through to the Euro 2016 quarterfinals after a Quaresma
goal in extra time helped them beat Croatia 1-0.
Luka Modric was back for Croatia as Portugal started with
Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani up front. Both teams failed to show any intent as
the game soon settled into a midfield slugfest. Chances were at a premium as
the game meandered to a draw in normal time. The only real opportunity fell for
Croatian defender Vida who headed wide twice from close range. Portuguese
youngster Renato Sanches brought some pace to the lacklustre match before the
game sparked to life in the final few minutes of extra time. After Croatia hit
the post, Portugal went on a counter. Sanches fed the ball to Nani on the left who
picked out an unmarked CR7 in the box with an outside of the foot pass.
Cristiano's resulting shot was saved by Subasic but it fell kindly to a lurking
Quaresma who headed it home from 3 yards to break Croatian hearts.
