POLAND EDGE SWITZERLAND IN SHOOTOUT
A 5-4 penalty shootout victory over Switzerland has resulted
in Poland reaching the Euro quarterfinals for the first time in their history
after a 1-1 draw in normal time. Jakub Blaszczykowski gave Poland the lead in
the 39th minute when Grosicki broke on a counter down the left and picked him
out in the box, courtesy a dummy from Milik. Kuba proceeded to finish through
Sommer's legs to the delirium of Polish fans. Switzerland upped their game in
the 2nd half and earned the equaliser after Shaqiri came up with a moment of
brilliance. The Stoke City winger instinctively sent an overhead kick from just
outside the box to the bottom corner in the 82nd minute and sent the match into
extra time. The Swiss were all over Poland in the extra 30 mts and Eren
Derdiyok could have won the match for them twice, but for Fabianski's saves.
In the shootout, Poland kept their cool and dispatched off
all the spot kicks but Granit Xhaka put his horribly wide as the Swiss crashed
out.
