Germany have created history after defeating Italy for the first time ever in a
major tournament after a dramatic penalty shootout that went into sudden death.
Germany line up in a 3-4-3 formation, similar to Italy's 3-5-2. Both teams
cancelled each other out for about an hour before Mesut Ozil broke the
deadlock. Hector's cross was deflected onto his feet and the Arsenal man
slotted the ball home in the 66th minute. Italy hit back 12 minutes later
through a Bonucci penalty after a clumsy handball by Jerome Boateng. The match
stretched into extra time and then into the penalty shootout which turned out
to be epic and crazy in equal measures. Zaza, Bonucci and Pelle missed for
Italy as Germany were left requiring Schweinsteiger to score the winner. But he
blazed his effort over to extend the shootout into sudden death. It went on
till the 9th Italian kick which was saved by Neuer (from Darmian). That left
Jonas Hector to win it for Germany and he duly obliged.
Germany will now face
France/Iceland.
